What's the challenge? Routine vs Adaptive...

I continue to love supporting and challenging the Masters students of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

We are into week 6 of focusing on the Leadership Attributes module. This week, we are considering adaptive situations and the type of leadership that is needed.

The Swansea based students' reflections included that life is rarely totally routine and fully adaptive, but that most of our workplaces and society value the certainty and control. This led us to broader conversations about how leadership (which we have established is part of all of us and within what we do on a daily basis) requires us to constantly re-evaluate because nothing is static.

I have shared how Organisational Gestalt points us towards an ever changing dynamic of each of us as individuals, others and the situation we are in. The students are starting to see how developing our own negative capability is essential, and is all the more so for those in formal leadership roles. I was asked the question if "Humility, listening, self-inquiry and exploration are all key requisites for adaptability?" - my first answer was "what do you think?"...leading to more discussion...and when pushed my answer was "yes, I think they are key leadership attributes". As Marshall Goldsmith points out "what got you here, won't get you there!"

Are you part of an organisation or system which values routine over adaptability? Are you trying to solve adaptive challenges using routine approaches? Do you need help with these?

If so, I may be able to help. My consultancy provides a range of services and support.
